Naihanchi
Naihanchi Kata is the first kata introduced to students who have trained before. Naihanchi is a complex kata, but rewards the practicioner with endless opportunities for koshi research. If this kata is learned well, principles discovered in Naihanchi will carry over into all other kata.
Fukyugata Ichi
Fukyugata Ichi was developed by Shoshin Nagamine for the Matsubayashi Ryu style as a basic kata that could be learned by anyone. We introduce Fukyugata Ichi to brand new beginners who have never trained before and might find Naihanchi too complicated to learn initially. Even though this is a very basic kata, it is practiced regularly by students of all experience levels and with sufficient study, can be as rewarding as any advanced kata.
Pinan Shodan
Pinan Shodan introduces the Cat stance (Neko Ashi Dachi) and Knifehand Block (Shuto Uke). This basic kata builds on principles of movement introduced in Fukyugata Ichi and is both beautiful in form and practical in application.
